Avocado Oil: Uses, Benefits, and Blends

Archeological evidence found in Coxcatlán Cave, in Tehuacán, in Puebla state, proves that South America has been enjoying some of the Avocado Oil benefits for over 10,000 years.

Avocado

Archeologists have revealed that Avocados were beloved even before humans walked the Earth. Researchers reveal that avocados were beloved even longer ago than that, being a staple diet of some dinosaurs and an extinct giant sloth!

A valuable commodity, humans have traded it for eons, and eventually, Avocados came to have religious significance to the Aztecs. Both the Aztecs and Mayans believed the fruit to have aphrodisiac properties, and named it Ahuacatl, meaning “Testicle”. It was believed to be linked to fertility gods and was forbidden to be eaten during religious festivals that required chastity.

Centuries later, when the Spanish conquered South America they were so enchanted by the beautiful, tasty and useful Avocado fruit, that they brought it back and planted Avocado trees right across the Mediterranean.

Its bewitching name tells a story in its own right. Persea is the Greek word for a tender tree and Gratissima means pleasing.

Avocado oil has tremendous ecological benefits across the world. VINEVIDA Avocado Oil is sourced from Mexico, but interestingly, in Guatemala, Avocados are grown not specifically for their fruit but specifically to provide shade for coffee crops. Avocado Oil is a highly sustainable crop, being a byproduct, or even a tertiary product of other food productions. Investment in these areas helps to strengthen the economics of these poorer communities.

Avocado Oil extraction is complex. Unlike most carrier oils this one is not taken from the seed but is cold-pressed from the flesh of fruits that have been damaged and are not considered suitable to sell for eating.

The fruit is peeled, stoned, sliced, and then dehydrated in an atmosphere devoid of oxygen at a temp of approximately 130 degrees C. to evaporate off any moisture which can be problematic to the emulsification. The pulp is then ground, cold-pressed, and filtered to remove impurities.

Avocado Oil benefits come from the fruit being so rich in linoleic acid, linoleic acid, and oleic acid. It also contains beta-sitosterol, beta carotene, lecithin, Vitamins A, B1, B2, and D. It has a rich mineral content including generous amounts of iodine

It has excellent keeping skills, but should not be put in a refrigerator. It can become cloudy, form deposits, or even solidify if it gets cold, but these disappear when the oil reliquifies at room temperature.

Avocado Oil Benefits: For Face, Skin, and Hair

Avocado Oil has a thicker, richer texture than many other oils, so like Rosehip or Tamanu Oils, for example, Avocado is usually used as a mixer with other carrier oils rather than being used alone. That said, despite its thick texture, it has good dermal penetration and feels luscious on the skin.

Traditionally Avocado Oil benefits have been best enjoyed for improving skin condition and for stimulating hair growth. Specifically, the richness of Avocado Oil is best suited to mature and post-menopausal skins, helping to retain elasticity in the complexion.

It is generally agreed that it probably penetrates the skin better than most carrier oils.

According to Stier 1990, it may be of use in Raynaud s Disease.

According to Price, used in equal quantities with sesame and olive oils, it may offer some protection from the sun.

Avocado Oil s unsaponifiable portion has applications for post-menopausal skin and also has benefits for osteoarthritis.

Avocado Oil for Face

According to Lin et al 2018, topical applications of Avocado Oil can increase collagen synthesis and decrease the number of inflammatory cells in the wound-healing process.

Avocado Oil for Skin

When choosing Avocado Oil for face treatments, consider using it for dry skin and inflammation. It displays anti-wrinkle properties as well as being a brilliant emollient.

Avocado Oil is often used as a base in lipsticks and makes wonderful treatments for chapped lips and sore babies’ bums!

Its fast penetrating action means Avocado Oil makes a great morning serum to prep the skin before adding makeup.

Avocado Oil for Hair Growth

A 2015 study confirmed that minerals in Avocado Oil, including potassium and magnesium, may seal cuticle cells helping to make hair look smoother and shinier and to prevent it from breaking.

Avocado Oil Uses: For Wholesale Purposes

Avocado Oil Benefits for Soapmakers

Avocado

Avocado has a sap value of 0.1337 and creates a medium creamy lather. It is slightly thicker than most carrier oils, is conditioned, and donates a light yellow-green tint to soap mixes. Recommended to be used at roughly 10 – 13% of the total oils.

Consider for nourishing and exfoliating balms.

With its greenish hue, why not pair it with herbal essential oils such as Spearmint, Rosemary, Basil, or maybe even some conifer oil to give a fresh blast of invigoration?
